Hanasaari’s activities aim at reinforcing contacts, updating awareness and knowledge about the neighbouring country, and providing ideas on how to apply the information pedagogically in teaching. Here are some examples of our activities: - Ensin Pohjolaan! (First Scandinavia!) – Information days for pupils in Finnish upper secondary schools and young Scandinavian people visiting Finland on society, and work and study opportunities in Scandinavian countries. The aim of the event is to bring together pupils from upper secondary schools throughout Finland and to increase interest towards Scandinavian countries and co-operation. The youth alliance (Nuorisoliitto) of Pohjola-Norden is also involved in the co-operation.
- Training days for Finnish teachers in Sweden. A three-day seminar for the members of Sweden’s association of Finnish teachers (RSO). The aim of the seminar is to learn about current social and cultural dialogue and pedagogy in Finland with the help of lectures, field trips and visits. Field trips to schools give a chance to meet with Finnish teachers and to gain tangible experiences of the Finnish school world. The participants also have the opportunity to establish contacts with their colleagues from different parts of Sweden.
- Training days for Swedish language teachers in Finnish schools. Further training and education seminars for Swedish language teachers in Finnish schools. Co-operation partner: Association of Finland’s Swedish language teachers (SRO).
- Sweden package: An information day targeted at Finnish-speaking students in higher education. The aim of the event is to increase awareness of the importance of Swedish language proficiency for a future working career. Information on current social questions, politics and economy is provided in a manner that is fun and easy but communicated by top experts. The programme is interactive and includes group discussions with Swedish students, and the day is concluded with a Swedish film.
- Svenska Nu (Swedish now). Hanasaari is the co-ordinator of the “Svenska nu” network that works to offer encounters with the Swedish language and youth culture in Finland with the help of positive role models. The “Svenska nu” project wants to bring children and young people positive experiences with language learning and help them understand that learning a language is useful and fun. The network supports language teaching, organises further education for teachers, communicates the importance of language proficiency, and communicates Swedish youth culture to Finnish schools.
