HAnalys 2019: Sweden, Finland and Europe

29.1.2019

Invitation only

The elections to the European Parliament are approaching. These elections in May 2019 and the Finnish presidency as of July 2019 actualize the debate in Sweden and Finland on our countries’ respective roles in an EU which is shaken by divisions but where new forms of cooperation also develop. Will the political and economic evolution of the EU countries lead them to different directions? The European cohesion will face new challenges after Brexit. Will it risk collapsing due to lack of harmony in questions about values such as the development of the rule of law, migration and human rights?

The actions of the USA have both political and especially economic consequences for Europe. Is the predominance of the transatlantic axis since the world wars getting weaker and will it be replaced with something else? Will Europe be able to lead the evolution? Should Europe foster new partnerships? What responsibility should Finland and Sweden take for the development of the EU?
