WHAT IS TANDEM LEADERSHIP?
TANDEM LEADERSHIP is a cross-sectoral network programme designed for young leaders from all parts of society in Finland and Sweden. The programme focuses on cross-sectoral learning between our countries. Participants in the programme meet with experts and leaders from both the private and public sectors as well as civil society and academia and gain insights into many topics, all with a direct or indirect bilateral focus.
Tandem Leadership is not a traditional leadership programme but rather a structured dialogue where participants learn from each other and through discussions with invited speakers. The programme includes both workshops and study visit’s and offers the participants international perspectives, knowledge of each country, new networks and opportunities for cross-border collaborations. An advantage of the programme is the diversity and varied professional background of the participants, which makes the programme unique in its kind. Tandem Leadership is politically and religiously independent.
THE EDUCATION SECTION
The course spans one year and contains two modules, each lasting three days, where one module is held in Finland and the other in Sweden. This also includes online meetings between the participants. The aim of the training is to create personal contacts between young leaders from Finland and Sweden, to be a platform for young people to discuss challenges that both our countries are facing and to develop the participants’ leadership skills.

THE ALUMNI NETWORK
After the training, participants become part of the programme’s alumni network. Among other things, the alumni network offers a platform for discussion and knowledge sharing on bilateral issues. It is a community to share ideas, get inspiration and come up with proposals for new forms of cooperation between our countries. The network is active both online and through physical meetings and events. Alumni are encouraged to take an active role in the network and reach out to the group with ideas, thoughts and suggestions.
THE BACKGROUND OF THE PROGRAMME
Tandem Leadership is initiated by the The Swedish-Finnish Cultural Foundation in collaboration with Peter Wallenberg Foundation. The first programme was carried out in 2013 and has been run by Hanaholmen since the start. The idea for Tandem Leadership was born in 2009 with the planning of the “Landmark Year 1809” when 200 years had passed since the separation between Sweden and Finland.
